Managing Dental Implant Problems & Issues in Manhattan
Dental implants have a long history of success and have aided millions of patients who have lost one or more of their teeth. While the majority of implants will function successfully, this may not always be the case. With more dentists placing and restoring dental implants, some of whom, lack the extensive experience that Dr. Rosen has had since he was trained back in the late 1980’s, dental implant complications are on the rise. Some of these problems are related to the health of the gum and bone around the implant where the implant becomes infected leading to gum and bone loss and potentially to the loss of the implant itself.

Other dental implant complications may relate to their being malpositioned, fracturing of the implants themselves due to an excessive biting force or migration of the implant into the sinus if it is not well secured. Dr. Rosen has the knowledge and experience that it takes to help prevent these problems or in some of the most challenging situations have creative solutions to solve them. In fact, he has contributed several chapters in two textbooks and written a number of articles on this subject.

Laser-Assisted Peri-implant Mucositis Procedure (LAPIMP™)
The initial infection surrounding a dental implant affects the soft tissues and is referred to as peri-implant mucositis. If left untreated, this problem can lead to bone loss. Most reports indicate that the varying treatments for this condition are about 40% successful. Dr. Rosen, using the PerioLase®, an Nd:YAG laser, has been able to treat this condition far more effectively than what has been reported in the dental literature as this particular laser is able to kill the bacteria and help remove the infected tissue without any cutting or suturing.

Peri-implantitis Treatment including LAPIP®
If the initial infection surrounding a dental implant progresses beyond the soft tissues and causes bone loss, it is referred to as peri-implantitis which is similar to periodontitis around a tooth. If left untreated, this problem can lead to loss of the dental implant. In some instances, the use of the PerioLase®, a Nd:YAG laser, in a technique know as Laser-Assisted Peri-implantitis Procedure (LAPIP®) may arrest this disease problem and quite possibly help grow back the lost bone. In many instances though, this is not the case and Dr. Rosen has been at the forefront in developing surgical treatment approaches where the infection has been eliminated and the lost bone has been grown back.
